February 12, 2012

2/5/12 Press Conference

Well how's it goin over there??

My parents said that you're appreciating all the details I'm giving, especially in the last couple emails. So that's good, hopefully they're not the only ones and I'm just boring all of you guys. If so, just go read the Book of Mormon. Now that's good stuff right there! haha =D

I'll now open the floor to questions.
Q. Um yes, Elder Gadberry. First of all thanks so much for allowing me to ask you a question, you're so cool.
A. Yes.
Q. Oh geez. Well my question was actually two questions....Is, um, that okay with you..?
A. Yes, dad. Go ahead.
Q. Okay, okay good. If I woulda only had to choose one, I don't know what I would have done.
A. Okay, come on now. What's the question?
Q. "Do you know how long you will be financial secretary? How long has Elder Stirland been in?"
A. Well, you see that's a great question. Elder Stirland has been here since I came into the mission. He came in July 26 and will leave Feb 22. So chances are it'll be similar for me, too. Probably five transfers or so.
*Okay moving on. Next question please*
Me - Oh geez, dad again?? What is it this time?
Q. Thanks again Elder Gadberry for allowing me to steal a quick second of your ever so valuable time, to ask you another question. You're soooo cool!
A. Yes.
Q. Umm.....I forgot.
A. Ugh! Okay moving on...
Q. Wait. Wait. Wait! I remember it!
A. Okay....
Q. "Did you know the Super Bowl is on right now?"
A. Well as a matter of fact I did not know that. But I'm sure it's over now. Moving on.
Q. Oh! Oh! Pick me! Pick me!
A. What is it mother?
Q. Oh golly gee! Thanks Elder Gadberry for picking me! You're ridiculously cool!
A. I think I've kinda begun to notice that, but thanks.
Q. "So what is your new ward (congregation) like? How many missionary companionships are there? Are there very many people you are teaching that come to church?"
A. Oh geez! Take it easy! But I'll try to get those answered for ya. The new ward is pretty cool! The ward/area is called Mandaluyong 2nd. We're actually one of the stronger wards in Mandaluyong from what I've heard. We're gettin about 150 at church on average if I remember right, so that's great! On Sunday actually, our Assistant Ward Mission Leader challenged me to get to know everyone in the ward in a month. That's goin be hard! But I'm goin do it cuz I'm goin be here for a while so I decided I'm goin get to know the ward really well, so my stay here will be awesome. There's actually two companionships in our ward. Us three and our ZLs (zone leaders-missionaries who oversee the work of several companion sets). I'm not too sure how many investigators they're gettin at church, but we usually don't have too many cuz we aren't in our area too much and when we are we really focus on our Less-Active families there. So this last Sunday was awesome! Cuz we had one less-active family there for the first time, we went and brought another less-active mother and her non-member/investigator daughter via Jeepney! (it was pretty legit...except we were pretty late cuz Stirland hopped on the wrong Jeepney), and then our less-active RM guy there too for the third time! He got an interview with the bishop and is now pretty much back in the church! WOO! But thank you mom. What a great question. Moving on.

Q. Me! Pick me!
A. Oh geez..mom again. Yes, mom?
Q. "Is your P-day going to get changed? Dad says it was hard for them to get appointments on Sat. afternoons, how is it for you guys?"
A. Well, yeah it's pretty much switched to Saturday now for us as office elders. It's just more efficient for our work if we can work in the office on Mondays. With preparation day on Monday for us. It's pretty much just like an office day cuz Elder Spencer especially has a lot of office things he has to get done on Monday for Tuesday. The sad thing is that Saturdays have been our best working days for the most part. But we'll just have to work extra hard during the week and then hit a lot of people on Sunday too. As far as this week goes, President told us to kinda try and do like a half day today and then another half on Saturday and then just do Saturdays from now on. So you'll probably be gettin a short email Saturday just to let you know what happened this week. Another great question mother! Moving on.

Q. Umm.. I've got another thing..
A. Hit me.
Q. "We talked about Nephi's "can do" attitude in Sunday School today. How that was his answer every time he was asked to do something. He didn't wait for the Lord to give him stuff, he figured out what he should do and took action and then let the Lord guide him. It reminded me of you and your fabulous attitude regarding what you are asked to do on your mission."
A. Umm..is that even a question?
Q. Well...no. But I thought you might have a comment.
A. Well as a matter of fact I do! I love Nephi!! Probably, some of that is due to Sister Demers at the start, but since then he's been such an AWESOME example to me! His attitude is awesome! And it's because of his faith. I especially have grown to like a couple stories about his attitude past 1 Nephi 3:7. One of them is when Nephi broke his bow. That's in 1 Nephi 16. He broke his super nice "fine steel" bow, and everyone got mad at him! It was even on accident! Of course he didn't do it on purpose! But even his father was complaining. But what did Nephi do? He went and acted. He replaced his "fine steel" bow by making from scratch a wooden bow. To arm himself he made himself one arrow, just one arrow. But he had the faith to go to the Lord through his father, the prophet, receive that council, and then go and do. And of course, he was blessed with success. He was able to fetch food for not only him and his family, but for everyone. Story two. Nephi is commanded to build a ship. He was visited by the Spirit and was told to go up into the mountain (there's some cool things about that too but we'll save that for another time), so he gets up and goes. There he prays to the Lord and is commanded to build a ship. Oh geez, a ship?? I don't even know how I would respond to that, but what's Nephi do? He doesn't say, "I don't know how to do that! We're doin just good here in Bountiful. Can't we just stay here?" He doesn't even say, "Okay, I'll try. How do I make a boat?" First thing he says is "where can I go to get the materials so I can make tools to build a boat." What faith! What attitude! He's soooo awesome! Read about it! 1 Nephi 16 and 17. Next question.

A. Well geez, mom you're just full of questions aren't you?
Q. Well, favorite son, I miss you soooo much! And I just wanna know everything!
A. Okay, what's your next question? Last one huh??
Q. Fine, fine. "I imagine the friendliness of the people in Manila and the pace of life is quite different than the island. Is it hard to adjust?"
A. Nah. I haven't found it terribly different. The people here still rock! The main difference is just that there's about 20 billion times more people..haha. They're still super nice for the most part, and love the westerners that can speak their language. haha

*And it came to pass, that thus ended this week's interview. Please feel free to join us again next week. And ask any questions that you may have. Fine print: Actual conversations, may not exactly be accurate and if you submit a question, similar side-effects may occur. Thanks! <3*

So that kinda took a lot of time, but I definitely enjoyed it so hopefully you guys did to to some extent. So I'll hit you with the highlights of this past week.

Oh geez, I'm lookin back and I remember Tuesday. It was great! Us three and President Stucki met with some people at the Area Office about some cell phone issues. So we got there and were waiting for President Stucki, and Elder Ardern (responsible for the church in the Philippines and elsewhere) just walks up the stairs, comes over greets us, shakes our hands, jokes a little bit, and then heads to his office to work for the day. So yeah, that was like the first thing we did that morning, have a little chat with a General Authority..haha But our meeting went well, we think we fixed our issues that we had. So yeah! Oh and I got to drive in the rain for the first time, which was weird cuz normally you'd think it rains a lot more than it has recently. But that was fun! And I'm still alive, so it was even successful!

So over the past week, Elder Stirland is startin to hand a lot of stuff over to me. It's gettin a little more stressful, but good nonetheless. I've been superrr busy in the office this week. I've definitely screwed up a lot, but nothing major.....yet. I got to send the Narra elders their support on Wednesday via like a money transfer place thingy. So that was kinda cool. And that went pretty well. For the most part I've spent a lot of this week working on apartment contracts for all the apartments here in the mission. Most of the apartment contracts need renewing, so I had to go through and find those. Tweak some stuff on the contracts, print them all out, get them signed by President, and then get them to all the Zone Leaders. It's taking forever. But I've got them all finished, I just have some more to give to President and then to Zone Leaders. I got to go pay bills, and do stuff with senior couple funds and what not. Been pretty busyyy! But all good. Friday we had Zone Leaders Conference. And Elder Stirland kinda left me on my own to fend for myself against all the zone leaders and their wants for reimbursements and what not. But it went pretty well!

Random news for the week! I have a new food creation that's probably just as healthy as all my other ones! But it's great! You make hot chocolate, and then you put ice cream in it! For me it's been cookie's n cream ice cream and it's been awesome! GUESS WHAT! I heard Rebecca Black!!! Too bad it was on Thrusday and not Friday, but it was AWESOME! hahaha I was the only one with us that knew about her, so I had to explain why it's a big deal. But yeah, if you're reading this Rebecca, you've made it to the Philippines. haha Also, I got Fro-yo! That's right, fro-yo in the Philippines. It was definitely legit. But kinda expensive...so we'll have to limit that...haha Also, I got to touch a soccer ball once! A kid was kicking around in the street and I was like pass it here! And he did! So yeah, that made my day.

I've also had some really cool spiritual experiences too. From a talk given by Elder Holland in the MTC about the verses about "feeding his sheep." And it was really cool to realize even more that if I love Christ, I will leave everything behind (like how Peter left his nets, boat, friends, etc.) and feed his sheep. And when I leave that stuff to feed His sheep I should never go back to that old lifestyle. It's not like I'm completely changing me, but I can never turn my back on the gospel. I'm going to be (cuz I'm awesome =D), but serving in His work should change me into a better, more Christ-like person, and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to serve. I also loved reading in 3 Nephi 8 and 9. You should read it for the full effect, but I really loved imagining how great it would be to hear Christ's voice in the midst of all that turmoil, saying "Come unto me, and be healed." These people were in complete darkness, many families separated, friends and family died, and then out of the darkness you here his kind, loving voice. Simply asking you to, "Repent, and return unto me. So I can heal you." (or something like that). It's awesome!

Okay Elder Stirland really needs the computer now. Gotta go! Have a great week!

1/29/12 E-mail!

Well my dad used "yo" last email... =/ so...

Yo!

How goes it everyone? Okay, okay, okay. Don't all answer at once. I didn't catch like any of that..haha I'm hilarious =D

Things are going great here. I'm still totes rockin the awk in the off. Alright share about "rockin the awk" first and totes. So this week my companions noticed me sayin "totes" and they're like what?? I'm like totes! you know, like totally but shorter. They're like okay, thats weird. I'm like no its not! Everyone does it in the states! You guys have just been gone for too long! So this week I've taught them the new lingo like totes and rockin and other shortened stuff like that. So at the temple tour I was talkin with Elder Spencer and I was like "Come on! You're totes rockin the awk right now!" and so they thought that one was hilarious and we use it fairly often now. So yeah! Now you guys can start using totes rockin/ed the awk. I'm pretty proud of that one.

So yeah this week was good! On Tuesday we had a little district potluck-ish thingy, and we told we were expected to bring adobo (be tee dubs, that's masarap!). So we had like twenty minutes to make it. Which is ridiculous. But we actually managed to make it! We were running around, kinda making a mess, and just hoping to finish it, and hoping it tastes decent cuz this was our first time making it. So we got it done! But...the rest of our district wasn't a big fan of it...haha I liked it! It was like super salty (so of course I liked it right? haha). But decent nonetheless! Especially for having been made in twenty minutes. While we were with our district, I spent a majority of the time talkin to Elder Koochin. It was great! He's from Canada, so we talked about HOCKEY! And yeah I'm def still learning how to play that, just fyi.

Wednesday it took us an HOUR to get to this office. Traffic was ridiculous! But we finally made it. And Elder Belarmino and his trainee had to come pick something up at the office so we talked with them for a while. His trainee is Elder Kang. He's from Mainland China! How cool is that?? The weird thing is that he knows very little english and no Tagalog...haha But the Tagalog he does know sounds hilarous cuz it sounds so Chinese-y.

We got to teach one of our few investigators that night. His name is Palma. He's awesome! He's really hard to describe because sometimes he's really random just cuz he has a ton of stuff going through his mind it seems, but he understands the stuff we're teaching him so well! And he's already started thinking about how he wants to help other people around him like we're helping him, but he said "I have to fix-ish myself before I can help everyone else." So he's really magaling!

So Thursday, I had an epiphany per se. I was doing and stuff in the office and we had a lottt to do that day in the office. And I stopped and was like hey! This will be more exciting than my little corner at NAL that summer...hahaha Sorry Barrie if you're reading this! But let the record show that Barrie rocks! I really did enjoy working at NAL though, just doing this stuff will be more fun and exciting and like fourteen times as stressful so it's a good thing that I don't get stressed out, right?? haha Because we had so much to do at the office, and a couple things Elder Stirland and I forgot really needed to be done. We had to leave Elder Stirland at the office with the APs while Elder Spencer and I went out a rocked the area cuz we had a couple appointments. So that was kinda weird not having Elder Stirland with us, but that's how it'll be next transfer! And we're goin DO WORK! haha

FRIDAY! That was my exactly six months in the Philippines! WOOO! Time's gone soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo fast. =) So of course we had to celebrate! So of course we rocked the Krispy Kream! So delish. I think the APs found this talk called like The Fourth Missionary. I'm not too sure on the title, but if you're interested you can probably find it on the internet. But anyways I've been reading it and it rocks! I finished it on Friday and I'm like I'm going to be that fourth missionary! From that talk he's the only one who like actually had his life changed by his mission. Like the "third missionary" was really good, but he didn't give all of himself to the Lord during the mission. Like one of the main things I noticed from that talk was that the 3rd missionary "sacrificed" his will for the Lord, but the 4th one "gave" his will to the Lord. He said that the 4th missionary doesn't throw out all of his dreams, desires, hobbies, enjoyments, and all that fun stuff, but rather he simply "packs them up and puts them on a shelf." So yeah, I'm going to rock the fourth missionary. haha The cool thing about Friday was that we actually got more time in our area compared to the office! And we got to teach Palma again!

Saturday was my first "temple tour." It was exciting! So temple tours are when we bring our investigators to the temple and they tour around and missionaries teach them about the temple and everything! It's an AWESOME experience for me and the people we're teaching. We thought for sure we'd have one of our less-active families there, BUT they texted us in the morning and couldn't make it... =( But it was still great. Got to help out, and talk to a bunch of missionaries and the people their teaching and it just woulda been even more awesome if our family woulda came!

But after the temple tour we went out to our area and got a reallyyyy good day of work in! We taught our RM less-active member, and he's totes back in the church just not officially yet. He made it to church again this week, so that's twice in a row. He's really enjoying it, and says that he misses going to the temple, so I'm pumped for him. After him we taught two other Less-active families that we just found for the first time! One of them even said that he didn't really have a reason for not coming to church and he knows he should go (especially cuz his son is serving a mission right now) so he said he'll come back to church next Sunday and we're goin hold him to it! Saturday was ridiculous though! We got fed at every appointment we went to! And it was all good stuff! From chips, fudge bars, RC, Sprite, Toron, Pancit, Monggo beans, and Pepsi! We had it all! haha

Sunday we had 6 white people at church (not counting our companionship), and I was kinda freaking out. But it turns out that they're Humanitarian Aid missionaries from the church and they're out here teaching doctors. So we got to talk to them for a while, and one of them even had a son serving in the Quezon City North mission. She took pictures with us (Mom-I think you guys may be gettin that pic to your email). Then we went out and worked and did our thang! Then this morning we woke up early and went and played basketball with one of the Zones here close to us. In case you guys were wondering the Finance Elders or "The Starberry Experience" went undefeated this morning. We kinda rock.

This week was good.

1/22/12 Pictures!

January 22, 2012

1/22/12 E-mail!

Mga minamahal kong kapatid,

And so passes another week here in Manila. Filled with turkey dinners, a bus bombing, and buying a stove in order to rescue some starving sisters. Now let's hit the details.

So yeah, it was another great week here! It's still kinda strange to be here in the city but I think I've managed limit my mentioning something about Coron to like one every couple minutes or so. Sometimes I just like to say stuff about it to bug Elder Stirland cuz he's been in the city his entire mission and is DYING to go out to Palawan..haha

So our running around trying to get people to place to place has pretty much settled down, but the stuff we have to do in the office always seems to manage to more than fill our day. I'm starting to get a lot of the stuff figured out that we do pretty routinely, but I'm definitely still dreading the day that Elder Stirland leaves and I'm left here on my own, freaking out. haha It's hard cuz I'm like thinking back to the days and thinking about all the office work we're doing and it's hard to remember things specifically but I definitely remember that we were busy..haha We've got lots of stuff to do!

We've got over 60 apartments to manage and make sure everything's good and then if people wanna move we gotta help get the stuff done for the new apartment (apartments are the biggest headache "daw" (that means someone else said it and you're just relying information so in this case Elder Stirland is the one referenced by "daw." It's quite efficient, you see.), about 200 missionaries to reimburse and to make sure they get their support every month, President's payments to manage, all the senior couple's finances to keep track of, all the budgets to prepare and keep track of, and just lots of stuff! haha But when I think about all that stuff we have to do it's amazing how pretty much this entire mission's finances is kept track of by 20 yr old elders who generally dont have a whole lot of business background/preparation, it's pretty amazing and a testimony builder of the Lord's hand in all things in His work here on the Earth. It's tight, yo!

So Wednesday was cool. We got to go to the temple with our zone, and all that jazz. We were supposed to leave at like 6 so we could make it to the 7am session, but...we definitely didn't wake up till 6..haha So we left at like 6:40 and sped thru traffic (pretty much no speed limit here just lots and lots and lots of cars in the way) and made it to the temple for the 7am session still! It was pretty legit.

There was at least 5 people at the temple who told me that I look like David Archuleta, and then like a few more from church two weeks ago! So that was kinda weird, but he's like big here in the Philippines for whatever reason, kinda weird too..haha

Oh and also, I'm getting better at ordering pizza from Pizza Hut for Sister Stucki! I even made a friend (more or less) at one of the pizza huts. Cuz we called in the order on Wednesday and but the order was for Friday so on Friday they called us to re-confirm the order and Elder Stirland answered the phone just cuz he had it and they asked for me and he just said he was Elder Gadberry for simplicity reasons. But my "friend" was like is this Elder Gadberry? (Actually they say Sir Elder Gadberry..haha) And so Elder Stirland sighed and was like okay and handed me the phone. So yeah, me and her are tight. haha

Thursday I got my license! Got to drive on EDSA, which is where allll the traffic is, and it was great! We got back to the office and I got the pleasure of sending an email out to most of the missionaries about some finance stuff. And that definitely did not go good...haha I sent three emails before I was finished..haha One just randomly sent when I was half way through, the second one was what we needed to say but I forgot the attachment, and then the third was all good. So yeah there's def some room to improve there...haha

We got some good work in in our area on Thursday too! We don't have a whole lot of people to teach because we're like part-time full-time missionaries as far as that stuff goes, but the people we have are awesome! I talked with one of the member families there about Pawnstars for a while and I was like what?? There's Pawnstars here too?? Ugh! I thought I left that with Caleb and Jacob..haha But it was still legit.

And then...just like 8 hours after I got my license...I get pulled over..hahaha There's this illegal U-turn that we have to make in order to get back to our apartment from our area. Well you don't "have" to take it but it saves you like 5 minutes. I didn't wanna take it but the other two said just do it cuz they had never gotten pulled over (Elder Stirland told me to add, that I asked if there were any cops and they said no and that's why we made that turn). Welp. Lucky me. But being the charismatic, charming person I am...I talked to the cop, tried to give him a Book of Mormon (assist credited to Elder Stirland on that one. When the cop came over Elder Stirland threw a Book of Mormon in my lap), told him I was new, and sorry and not going to do it again, and he said he'd forgive me. SCORE! But yeah, def not making that turn again...haha

Friday, my driving adventures continued. I got the "honor" of driving on coding day. Almost all the cars here in Manila, can't drive on one certain day of the week in order to try and lesson traffic (to no avail) and our day is Friday! Well, we have to drive cuz we have to work, so we just be extra careful. I guess coding is kinda like wearing your seatbelt. For the most part they're not going to pull you over just for coding but that'll get hit on top of whatever it was you got pulled over for in the first place. But we made it all good. And then that evening we got a call from one of the sisters, telling us that their stove is broken and they couldn't cook. So that means, we don't get to work in our area, instead we had to rush to the mall before everything closes and try and find a stove for them. We had to run to like 3 different department stores before we found one that would work and then we grabbed them some McDonalds cuz we're awesome and thought that they might wanna eat, and took the stove to them. So we're like super heroes over here in the office. Boom-shocka-locka! (<-- anyone know that reference??)

Saturday was great cuz we didn't have to work in the office! We got to rock the area! At least for a while until we found out it was Elder Dietrich's (the Dietrich's are the office senior couple here) birthday and we needed to get back to the apartment so we could eat! Sister Dietrich made us spaghetti it was great! And I got to ride a jeepney for like only the third time in my entire mission! haha Well after the birthday dinner we went back out and worked! We had a lesson with a former missionary that is not very active in church but he's starting to come back. It was great! And then we tried to follow up on another one of their investigators and found him hanging out with all his drunk friends. Well Elder Stirland was talking to the investigator, Elder Spencer got this other guy that apparently knew them from earlier visits, and I got the rest of the drunken men... That was not my funnest conversation ever, but definitely one of my most interesting. At one point, they asked if I knew Tagalog. Well I've only been speaking it to you for the last five minutes....I simply said yes. And then one of them retorted with, "That's not true! You can't know Tagalog! You can't learn Tagalog in 6 months!" He seemed like legitimately angry about it...haha And then at another point his friend asked me where my visa was and when I didn't have it carrying around with me he repeatedly threatened to call the police or somethin..haha So yeah, interesting for sure. But let's talk about the Dietrich's and specifically, Elder Dietrich! They're awesome! They're from a small town in Indiana! Midwest, reppin it up! And they're name is Dietrich, just like the town, Dietrich! And Elder Dietrich is 71 one and he said like the thing he misses most, is his Harley! He's hilarious, and they're awesome! They really remind me of all those people I know back home..haha.

Sunday was great as well, of course. The Area Presidency has really set up the Philippines to do work this upcoming year! We had an Area Broadcast just a couple weeks ago and they set some really, really good goals for the church here. And I can already feel it gettin started in church with the leaders talking about it in sacrament meeting and the missionaries instructed to work in harmony with those area goals set for the members. It's going to be an exciting year! But one thing is weird...there's no water fountains here in their churches! I guess there's like no water fountains anywhere in the Philippines I was just informed! That's so weird!

But that evening we had a dinner appointment at the Mission Home for Elder Dietrich's birthday. And it was AWESOME! I had turkey!, mashed pa-taters!, a roll!, watermelon, and mango! And then desert on top! Oh geeeeez it was sooooo good! TURKEY AND MASHED POTATOES! Yeah, I can dig that part of the office.

Monday wasn't too exciting and all...just had interviews with President and experienced a bus bombing! Alright, we didn't like experience-experience it but pretty much! We were sittin in the office after we got done with all our stuff with President and it was like the middle of the afternoon and BOOM! We didn't see it but oh golly gee did we hear it and it like even felt it a little. We went outside to see what happened and didn't see anything but a bomb squad and lot's of security drove by and guys with M16s hopped out of the squads. So we just went back inside and continued our day. I guess what happened, we heard from Sister Dietrich today, it was a bomb placed on the bus triggered by a cell phone. And they think it's Alkaida or however you spell it. Sketchy-sketchy! But all's well of course!

So today's today. P-day on Tuesday cuz of all that jazz with Pres on Monday. I got my haircut =/ But it's my first decent haircut here! Probably cuz I paid like four times of what I used to pay! (but still only about five bucks) haha But they like washed my hair, cut it, and washed it again and all that jazz pretty legit.

So yeah, such is life. I'mma city boy now. haha But still urn to go back to Coron.

Love,

Elder Michael Gadberry
